Smudging is the practice of burning herbs, most commonly sage, to get rid of negative energy on yourself, in your home, or any space for that matter. Smudging is very useful when you are feeling bad (angry, depressed, resentful) or have any type of negative energy that is bringing you down.
To smudge, light the sage stick and let it catch fire. Extinguish the fire and let the smoke billow from the stick. Walk around letting the smoke surround you and fill the space, doing its job of bringing peace and harmony into your life. The smoke is not dangerous or harmful to inhale or be around.
I use sage daily in my meditation and any time that I am feeling anxious or upset. It has become a calming and grounding ritual for me. Be sure to have a dish or ashtray on hand to lay the stick in while it continues to smolder and then burn out. Please do not leave lit sage unattended.
