I can’t tell you how many times I have heard, “I can’t wait for this season to be over.” or “It’s almost over, thank God.” Why are we wishing away the holiday’s?
Why is it that something that should be so much fun and fulfilling – giving gifts to others – can be so stressful, draining and exhausting? We scour flyers and online sites for the best deals, sometimes standing in line for hours, just to make sure we have that perfect gift. Then there is that person that seems to have everything and is impossible to buy for!
Stop and think for a minute how you feel when you receive a gift. If the gift in any way shape or form relates to something you like, does it really matter what the exact gift is? The fact that the giver thought enough about you and your interests to find said item, then took the time to wrap it and give it to you, isn’t that the real gift?
We all want to feel loved and appreciated. Instead of agonizing over the perfect gift, why not focus instead on showing love and appreciation throughout the year and not just on Christmas. Take some of the pressure off of yourself and remember that the thought is really what counts. By showing someone you are thinking of them and appreciate them enough to offer a gift, even a homemade batch of something, will make that person smile and feel warm and fuzzy inside (it even worked for the Grinch).
This should be a season of gathering with loved ones, laughing, creating fond memories and spreading love and kindness. Do not let the crazy, self critical stress monkeys in your head ruin it for you (or those around you). Making memories is what the holiday season is all about. The best things in life are the people you love, the places you’ve seen, and the memories you’ve made along the way. Make sure to stop and enjoy.
Wrapping you in the magic of the season,
